Four Creative Habits that Boost Mental Wellness

Before I transitioned careers, I did several creative activities that served as my outlet from a very stressful job. This actually led to the creation of Revive and Bloom as I wanted to inspire others to also use creativity as an outlet from the stressors of the world. I found that as I created, it helped me to cope with anxious thoughts and negative self-talk.

Stephen Murphy-Shigematsu Ed.D., a psychologist in Leadership and Wellness at Stanford University School of Medicine stated, “engaging in creative arts can help to decrease stress, anxiety, depression, and the effects of trauma. Expressive arts therapies create ways to express and process emotions that may feel beyond words and can help to increase emotional centeredness and creative problem-solving abilities.” In a nutshell, he tells us that creative expression can be great for our emotional well-being and can provide ways to cope with certain mental stressors.

Of course, you’re probably thinking that you have to be a creative person to even begin creative habits. But that is far from the truth. There are actually habits that you can form that don’t require you to be super creative. Remember, the activities you choose should also be to your liking. Just because something works for one person does not necessarily mean it will work for you as well. Try different things to see what keeps your interest.

I’ve listed just a few simple habits that don’t take much effort. The next time you are having a stressful day, try these creative activities to clear your mind. When you’ve found your niche, try to make it a habit.

  1. Propagating Plants

Propagating plants allows you to experiment with different techniques and styles, and you can even create new varieties by cross-pollinating. Plus, there's something satisfying about watching your plants grow and thrive under your care.

2. Rearranging Furniture

Rearranging decor can definitely be a creative outlet! It allows you to experiment with different layouts and aesthetics without making any permanent changes. Plus, it can give your space a fresh new look without spending any money.

3. Journaling

Journaling allows you to express your thoughts and emotions in a personal and unique way. Writing in a journal can also help you to explore new ideas and perspectives, develop your writing skills, and relieve stress. Give it a try, and see where your journaling takes you!

4. Cooking a New Recipe

Cooking a new recipe can be a great creative outlet as you can experiment with different flavors and techniques to create something delicious and unique. Don't be afraid to try new things and have fun in the kitchen. Happy cooking!

These are just a few ideas to help get you started. Remember, it’s best to choose an activity based on what your strengths and interests are. Choose what works best for you, otherwise, you will be causing more work for yourself which will lead to more stress. Happy blooming!
